What
GraphQL is a query language and API layer that lets clients request exactly the data they need in a single round trip. At Doccla it's used with Apollo Client and codegen in clinician-portal.
Why this ring
It works well for the BFF (backend-for-frontend) pattern in clinician-portal, where the frontend drives the shape of the data. We have evidence it works but haven't adopted it across other services yet.
What does this mean
Worth using on real projects where the BFF pattern fits and the risk is manageable. It's not yet a standard across the estate, so don't assume it everywhere.
