What
Elixir is a functional language that runs on the BEAM (the Erlang VM). It's Doccla's primary backend language, with a significant estate of services built on it - including our core product, opentele.
Why this ring
It's the default choice for new backend work. The BEAM runtime - concurrency, fault tolerance, and performance - makes it a strong fit for the event-driven and real-time workloads at the heart of our platform. We're also consolidating the backend onto one main language so people can move between services and review each other's code without switching language first.
What does this mean
New backend work should be in Elixir unless there's a strong reason otherwise. If you think you've got a good case for something else, bring it to the Backend co-op.
