Clojure

What

Clojure is a functional, dynamically-typed Lisp that runs on the JVM. At Doccla it backs our EHR integrations (UniFHIR) and a couple of other backend services.

Why this ring

Clojure has served us well. We're consolidating the backend onto one main language, Elixir. Our core product, opentele, is already written in Elixir, and we want as many people on the team as possible able to work on it comfortably. Keeping new backend work in a single language helps that: people can move between services and review each other's code without switching language first.

What does this mean

Hold here means Clojure isn't the default for new work, not that it's on the way out. Existing Clojure services are supported and still actively developed - UniFHIR is extended every day. If you think you've got a good case for Clojure in something new, bring it to the Backend co-op.
